Steve Spurrier saw an opportunity to surprise Darius Rucker, and he went for it.

On Thursday, the South Carolina football coach called into the Dan Patrick Show to talk to the country star.

After skipping out on his scheduled Tuesday morning spot on The Dan Patrick Show, Steve Spurrier apologized Wednesday during a telling interview with the.

At first, Patrick introduced Spurrier as “Steven in Columbia, South Carolina,” but Rucker — who happened to be wearing a South Carolina hat — caught on pretty quick. He inquired with a laugh: “Is this the Ball Coach?”

Spurrier explained he was getting ready to go to Tampa to watch South Carolina play in the women’s basketball Final Four, then implored Rucker to write a fight song for the Gamecocks — which wouldn’t be completely out of the realm of possibility, given the two are golf buddies.

However, it looks like Rucker isn’t the only country star Spurrier has been chatting with recently.

Earlier this week, the coach tweeted a photo of himself and Kenny Chesney.
