More than 300 million EKGs (short for electrocardiogram, a test that checks heart rhythm and electrical signals of the heart) are conducted around the world each year, according to a study published June 4, 2020, in Lancet Digital Health.
The invention itself has been in use for over 100 years.
“An EKG can provide a measure of the electrical impulses from the heart, and it gives us information about the rate and the rhythm and other information, including the size of the heart, whether a person has an injury to the heart, whether that injury is acute or an old injury,” says Mary Ann Bauman, MD, a volunteer expert and the president of the western states region for the American Heart Association.
The test can detect arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), whether narrowed or blocked arteries from heart disease are causing chest pain or heart attack, signs of a previous heart attack, cardiomyopathy (where the walls of the heart are thickened or enlarged), and the effectiveness of certain heart disease treatments.
